Business Process Modeling

Can you diagram what you do?

Anything worth doing well should be planned, analyzed and fully understood. The most fundamental components of your organization are the actions which employees take every day to achieve success. Procedures arise from necessity, and usually are off and running before there is time for a conscious process of design and review. We are so busy working we rarely have time to even consider better and smarter ways to work.

To enable dramatic productivity transformations in groups, Slaughter Development offers Business Process Modeling. Through an interactive engagement, we collaboratively design procedures to improve stakeholder satisfaction and operational effectiveness.

Research and Analysis

The team at Slaughter Development begins a modeling project by understanding the dynamics of the organization. This is best achieved through Workplace Diagnostics, but if a company or non-profit entity desires process consulting services on an extremely specific range of workplace activities,  we can conduct an isolated service focusing on the targeted area. Stakeholders should be prepared to participate in a kickoff meeting followed by individual interviews, as well as provide any existing documentation of current processes, procedures and protocols.

After collecting initial data, we work with you to analyze your business processes and develop a comprehensive and accurate model of workplace interaction. This endeavor is not instant, but iterative. We engage members of your staff for short, high-intensity meetings to review progress and refine our efforts. The finished analysis is a combination of careful, thorough research and multiple design cycles in cooperation with your team. Our work product is the model of your work process.

UML and BPMN

All engineers use formal toolkits in their work, and methodology engineering draws on two industry standards. The Unified Modeling Language is a standardized, general-purpose framework for describing interactions in complex systems through precise functional diagrams. When used in conjunction with Business Processing Modeling Notation, virtually any predictable workplace interaction can be captured in a precise and useful visual mapping. Together, UML and BPMN form a combined framework for clearly describing your business processes.

Slaughter Development uses UML and BPMN not only because they are mature, well-defined technologies, but also because they bridge the gap between systems engineering and everyday business actions. Technical stakeholders find confidence in the wisdom and expertise of the Object Management Group, the international consortium which maintains and promotes the UML and BPMN standards. Managers and employees can quickly master the basics of the standard modeling systems, as these are expressed with diagrams, not encodings. A core objective of Business Process Modeling is to teach your stakeholders the fundamentals of UML and BPMN. In addition, Slaughter Development offers half day and full day courses on UML/BPMN aimed at non-technical professionals.

Model Presentation

Completed business process models are communicated to key parties through a presentation, a written report and our online client access portal. Three channels are necessary to establish understanding and build consensus among all parties. Each group not only processes new information differently, but processes organizational modeling through the lens of their role and personal experience. Slaughter Development’s commitment to stakeholder satisfaction requires that we fully release all deliverables only when we are confident we have answered all outstanding questions, and the model has earned both the respect and the enthusiasm of the organization. Whether you work with our firm to bring the new processes to life via our System Implementation offering, or decide to pursue other avenues to conduct the roll-out, you will need the momentum of a charged workforce to enact the new system.

Costs and Timeframe

The complexity of Business Process Modeling varies greatly depending on the organization. To assist in your budgeting process, the following grid outlines a range of costs based on the number of people involved in an existing process and the complexity index.
