Last week, we told the story of Michael and his troubles with the local health department. Today we reflect on his experience and offer some advice for the situation—in the form of a video response.

    Thank you for mapping out the process behind the Health Department’s response. I learned a new term, “swimlane.” What is missing from inside the pool is the customer service department. Michael’s troubles were exacerbated by the terseness of the reply and the fact that the context of his problem was obviously not reviewed.

    In reviewing the activity diagram, it seems a trigger for customer service involvement could be a notification on the same property within a certain timeframe. That way if an inspector goes outside the swimlane, back to the notification department, this “repeat” notification would result in a customer service review as well as a re-inspection.
